Shrine Catholic Academy History

1993 - The idea for the academy is presented to Mr. Tom Kirkwood and Monsignor Brunett by Mrs. Gail Bilkie. The academy is set up within the high school building on 13 Mile Road under the direction of Mrs. Marge Caram.

1993 - Mrs. Gail Bilkie celebrates 25 years at Shrine.

May 1993 - Mrs. Marge Caram becomes the third Grade School Principal. Mrs. Caram serves as Director of the Academy while also serving as Grade School Principal.

October 1996 - Reverend Monsignor William H. Easton becomes Shrine of the Little Flower Parish Pastor.

September 30, 1997 - On the 100 th anniversary of her death, Pope John Paul II designates St. Thérèse a Doctor of the Church.

1998 - Shrine of the Little Flower Church is named a National Shrine. It is dedicated as a National Shrine by Adam Cardinal Maida, Archbishop of Detroit in January 1999.

1999 - Shrine Schools become Shrine Catholic Schools.

November 1999 - The remains of St. Thérèse of Lisieux, “The Little Flower” and our beloved patron saint, are visited by thousands at the National Shrine of the Little Flower.

January 31, 2000 3 pm - Shrine Catholic Schools’ first website is launched under the direction of Mrs. Cindy Romano. Mrs. Romano was responsible for the design and implementation of the site and served as the webmaster until August 2004.

February 7, 2005 - Monsignor Easton announces that the academy and high school will adopt the President/Principal model of administration for the new school year. Mrs. Gabrielle Erken is named principal of both schools. The schools continue to maintain their individual identities and remain distinct entities.

June 2005 - Construction begins at the high school and academy . Initially one science room is updated and the groundwork for further construction is laid.

November 4, 2005 9 pm - Shrine Catholic Schools’ second website is launched under the direction of Ms. Heather Curtis. Ms. Curtis was responsible for the design and implementation of the site and serves as the webmaster.
